I grew up stomping around in the woods with my dad and learned to swim in the Illinois river while fighting off Water Moccasins (a little over dramatic, but true nonetheless). Then from junior high through college we had 70 acres in Texas with cattle, horses, goats and various other critters, and where I learned many ranching skills.
My wife comes from multiple generations of Kansas wheat farmers. She is a dedicated student of herbs and has a cure for most everything that ails us. She is also a quilter and maker of cloth reusable products that have allowed us to be more green. Her continual efforts in stocking the right kinds of food has forced me to develop a rotational system that will keep things as fresh as possible.
We started out our marriage living on a 30-foot sailboat where we learned to do without some comforts and became creative in regards to storage. In nearly seven years on our boat, we began experimenting with alternate energy and honed our navigation skills.
At that same time we worked in Belize, Central America. Our time in Belize consisted of numerous short-term (2wk-2mth) trips. During these trips, we primarily worked with the Maya Indians in the rain forests of southern Belize. Their simple/natural lifestyle continues to be an inspiration to us.
The last five years we have been in the Army. During this time I spent 27 months in or near Baghdad as an intelligence analyst. And although this was primarily an inside/computer job, I trained up for and attended special forces selection, further solidifying my navigation and survival skills (and sustaining an injury:( I guess 37 yrs old was pushing it a bit).
That's a little about us, but the Well-Equipped Family is much more than just us. We have surrounded ourselves with like-minded people, and are continually learning from each other. Equipping our families is an ongoing adventure and the learning never stops.
So join us in this great adventure of homesteading, preparedness and survival as we equip our families for what lays ahead!
