Volcanoes produce many dangers to people and land. Among these dangers are lava flows, landslides (mudflows or Lahars), released gases, ash and earthquakes If you are living in a risk area it is essential to have a volcano preparedness plan to help safeguard your family. First check out our survival/preparedness checklist, survival kit, as well as our essential first aid kit items. In addition to these important items add a pair of goggles and disposable breathing mask for each person in your home.
In the case of a volcano you will most likely be evacuating the area so ensure you have a primary supplies bag in your vehicle with an extra set of keys and keep the gas tank full; plan on traveling more than 50 miles on a preplanned evacuation route. Your preparedness kit should be kept in an Army duffle bag or similar easy “grab and go” bag if you are in a volcanic activity area. Remember: Leave early if the volcano shows signs of activity that cause the authorities to issue evacuation orders.
If driving is not an option try to find shelter inside for your family, animals, and equipment. Close all windows, doors and vents to minimize exposure. If no shelter can be found ensure to avoid rivers and streams that may be channels for fast moving flows.
At all times you need to cover as much of your body as possible by wearing long sleeves, goggles, and glasses instead of contact lenses.
